myBonzle menu: Add to my places Add picture Add story Add note Skip to map The Ballina FAD lies about 10.1 km (5.44 nautical miles) off the coast of New South Wales in the Coral Sea which is part of the South Pacific Ocean (show New South Wales on map). A FAD or 'fish attracting/aggregating device' is a man made structure deployed at sea. They can provide a focal point for the aggregation of certain pelagic fish species in the warmer months. In particular, Dolphinfish or Mahi Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) are particularly well known as being attracted to FADs. In New South Wales, a number of FADs are deployed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries in September and are removed for maintenance in June. They may be redeployed in different locations in following years. In the near vicinity of the Ballina FAD the water depth ranges from about 59.1 to 55.8 metres deep (about 30.5 to 32.3 fathoms / 183 to 194 feet). The nearest Australian towns, villages or cities to the Ballina FAD are the city of Ballina (show me), the town of Lennox Head (show me) and the town of Alstonville (show me).
